Root canal treatments are routine procedure done on the dental chair under local anaesthesia. Root Canal treatment is a procedure done to save a badly damaged or infected tooth. Root canal is usually indicated when:

  1. Pain on chewing

  2. Throbbing pain while lying down.

  3. Sensitivity to hot and cold.

  4. Swelling around the Gums.

  5. Attrited or worn-out teeth.

  6. Badly Damaged teeth.

  7. Sometimes its intentionally also done as in full mouth restoration cases.

When the infection reaches the pulp it causes pain and is indicative of root canal. Pulp is a center of the tooth and network of blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. The infected pulp is removed and the tooth is sealed. Slight sensitivity is observed along with soreness of the gums for 2 -3 weeks. Patient is advised to chew from the opposite side. The procedure can be single or multiple sittings depending on the severity of the infection.

First anesthesia is given to numb the area around the tooth. The drill is used to enter the pulp chambers. Files are used to remove the infected pulp and the chamber is sealed. Initially a temporary filing may be given over the tooth and kept under observation. Once the patient is comfortable a permanent filling and a cown is given.

The root canal causes the tooth to become brittle so it is compulsory for placing a crown over the root canal treated tooth. This increases the life of the tooth and prevents it from fracture.

The root canal sittings may vary from a single to 2 to 3 sittings depending on the infection is the pulp.

Till the crown is not restored on the root canal treated tooth it is adviseable to not chew from that side. Once the crown is placed one should maintain effective dental hygiene for long lasting of the root canal.
